The Stigma of Being Rude
[01/30/2002] [Sir Feral Lynn] The term netiquette gets thrown around a lot, especially when folks do something to violate that precious form of politeness. Now, I’m all for being polite, and by and large the netiquette system is a good ‘golden rule’ of online communication. But there are those who consider it their duty to be the “Netiquette Police.” And there are those who completely rape the email gentleman’s agreement. To whit: 1. The vast majority of the folks who have ever flamed me for poor netiquette are some of the rudest folks I know. It seems that it is ok to be rude, to insult, to verbally abuse, but the instant that you violate netiquette they are screaming like banshees about it. Talk about hypocrisy. 2. There are those who abuse the netiquette system. They will say one thing in private post and then lie about it publicly. This is done with the mutual understanding that to air what was said in private email carries some sort of sacred “Do Not Disturb” sign. It happens all the time, heck, it just happened to me a day ago. This is crafty manipulation of the system and is just sickening. I for one am seriously considering just throwing away this system of instant ass-covering. If somebody lies, especially to Amtgard, and I have the proof I think I’ll post the relevant info and to heck with the stigma of being rude. At least I’m honest about it and I’ve told y’all ahead of time.
