Things a Newbie Needs
[12/19/2004] [Zoah]My Amtgard name is Zoah and I have been in Amtgard for about a year and a half. Different people have different ways of judging who a newbie is -- some by how well they fight, and some by how long they have been in the game, and some by how old they are in real life. Myself, I'm 14 in real life. I know some people in Amtgard who are younger than me, too. One of the troubles of joining Amtgard early is people don't take it easy on you for things like sluffing and not knowing how to play. I think that when someone new joins, they need to have the basics of how to play explained to them. I was lucky. I knew a little about how to play already and got right into the swing of things. But joining early is not all bad. You are more agile than most of the other players out there. People are willing to show you how to fight. Another thing that we could improve is helping newbies make garb. After awhile. they start to think that it's all right to come out with t-shirts that have marker and duct tape on them. We could lend them garb for awhile and help them make garb of their own. Along with the garb is weapons. They go out with horribly-made weapons and never learn any other way to make them so they think it's all right. There are some things we can improve upon with helping newbies. But don't take it that it's all bad. I think that we just need to provide more opportunities for them, like going to events. Again, I was lucky and found people to take me to Clan and to other chapters for events. I think my experience so far as a newbie is one of the best out of all the other newbies I know. The biggest thing is for older members to greet new members with the best of Amtgard.
