|What's In a Name?
What constitutes a bad name? Bad names can be broken down into four categories:
|1.||It references something obviously modern. “Pepsi” or “Angry Pop Tart."|
|2.||It is already in widely in use. “Chaos” or ”Shadow." (There are 139 references to Shadow on the ORK, 27 of which are just “Shadow.”)|
|3.||They are plucked liberally from print. “Aragorn", “Arya” or “Jimmy the Hand.”|
|4.||They are just bad yuck sounding.|
We can’t do something about #4, but is there something we can do about the rest? The rulebook directly states that “every Persona must be either of an ancient, medieval, or swords and sorcery related background", and says “do not impersonate” twice under both the historical and fiction setting. It’s it writing. We all know that. Who then, is supposed to enforce it? The Monarch, the Guildmaster of Reeves, the Prime Minister? Who? And can you appeal if you are told your name isn't acceptable? Also, while there is no rule against using the same name as other people, #2 is quite annoying as well. It’s quite easy to confuse Rising Winds Styx with Celestial Kingdom Styx, and there are two sword knights named some variant of Brennon. It’s not the fault of any of these individuals, as there is no system in place to reserve a name.
So what solutions are there?
#1 and #3. Monarch. If you feel a name is vastly inappropriate, require it to be changed. Now, there are certain grandfathering elements that need to be taken into account, and you should be quite lenient in this regard, but if you hear someone referred to as Laserbeam you should step in ask them to change it.
#3. I think the Prime Minister should step up here. It’s not feasible to go on a mass renaming spree, but it would be a simple step to do a quick search when entering someone into the ORK for the first time. Let that new person know there are already five Midnights out there and they might want to pick something else.
#4. Veterans. If a name sucks, let that person know. Gently. They might listen, they might not.
Or maybe we can just bribe Rewth to put a feature in the ORK that sends an alert when entering a new name if there are a certain number of people with that name already, or if there is a knight with that name.
And anyone from this point forward anointing themselves Shadow should be filleted and served at feast.
