Letter to a New Knight
[10/01/2007] [Tanath]Many congrats on the knighting. You have put in your years, you have collected your box tops. You have been recognized by the Peerage as being a Knight. There's not much else to this game really, but it's beginning all over again now. From here out you will be expected to know everything about everything by everyone who is new, and among those who are old and jaded, it will be assumed you know nothing about anything. Those you don't know will use you to justify their positions, those who do know will wonder where the real you went. You'll have a new set of friends who you never knew before but will now be your real friends and know you oh so much better than those you came up through the ranks with. Everyone is a changing while your'e just staying the same. Your nineteen winning streak before the belt was noteworthy and proof of your A game. Now it will just be bullshit because you're only a flame knight. On top of it all, you will now get to pay to play a game where your time will be taken up by meetings and pow-wows as you listen to everyone's Amt-philosophy. Somewhere in there you'll get to play Paladin or Anti-Paladin and realize how much better they were in 6.0. At the end of the day you'll head home having disappointed those whose favor you've never tried to earn and you'll have pissed off some guy who's been playing five years and has twp Orders of the Whatever because you somehow offended his sense of honor. After looking up his ORK you'll realize you've never actually spoken with the guy. It was with these thoughts in mind that I kneed you in the balls. I wanted to be the first to do so to the new knight. There's a lot of bullshit that goes along with a white belt in this game, but there's an awful lot of fun that goes along with it as well. Those things aren't the things I'll tell you about because they can be pretty much magic moments and those should be saved so you can experience them for yourself. And you will. It's a great game full of the greatest people I've ever met. The biggest secret you'll discover over time is that Amtgard was the best when you finally lost the newbie title. Rewind time to that point and relive the fun. Forget the belt and be that guy. Let the belt serve as an outward symbol of your sucess in this game and let everyone see it except yourself. If you can forget that you have it you'll be the happiest knight in the world and continue to do the great things that got you this far in the first place. Have fun and enjoy being a knight. You deserved the honor and now it is yours. Congrats again and serve well the game.
